Becoming Clive: Ben Starr talks Final Fantasy XVI

Voice actor Ben Starr, known for his portrayal of Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI, recently opened up about his experience bringing the character to life. Starr expressed his overwhelming emotions upon landing the role, admitting he screamed into a pillow upon discovering he would be part of the Final Fantasy franchise. Being a long-time fan of Final Fantasy, Starr considered it a dream come true to contribute to a series he grew up loving.


Starr discussed the process of finding Clive's distinctive voice, describing the character as an extension of himself with added layers of trauma. He emphasized the importance of Clive's vocal range, allowing him to convey a wide range of emotions throughout the game. Additionally, Starr revealed that Clive goes through three chapters of his life, and capturing the progression was a key focus in his performance.


When asked about his favorite Final Fantasy game, Starr immediately pointed to Final Fantasy VIII, which holds a special place in his heart as the first game he played in the series. He praised its immersive world and the sense of connection it brought him, even mentioning that it marked a distinction in his life before and after experiencing Final Fantasy. Although he expressed admiration for other titles in the franchise, Final Fantasy VIII remains his personal favorite.


Starr also shared his excitement about the release of Final Fantasy XVI, acknowledging that the game's availability to the public marks a shift from his personal journey with it to the audience's ownership of the characters and their stories. He looks forward to witnessing fans' creativity, such as art and cosplay, as they make the characters their own. Starr concluded by expressing gratitude for being a part of the Final Fantasy pantheon and the lasting impact these stories have had on him.
