FFXVII in the Hands of Youth? Yoshida Advocates for Change

In a recent Game Maker's Notebook podcast, Naoki Yoshida, the creative force behind Final Fantasy XVI, delved into the game's development. Emerging in the aftermath of Final Fantasy XV's release, the project initially featured Yoshida as the producer, Hiroshi Takai as the director, and Kazutoyo Maehiro as the scenario writer. As the story took shape, the team rapidly expanded.

Unlike its predecessor, Final Fantasy XVI opted for a more linear world with a focus on action gameplay. This decision aimed to appeal to a broader audience unfamiliar with turn-based mechanics. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted development, particularly during the crucial cutscene creation phase. Yoshida, also a designer, stepped in, streamlining the process and enhancing efficiency during the challenging work-from-home transition.

Yoshida's involvement sparked intriguing questions about his role in the potential development of Final Fantasy XVII. When asked about directing the next numbered title, he hinted at the possibility of a new, younger director taking the reins. Yoshida stressed the importance of fresh perspectives, suggesting that it might be time for a new generation to shape the future of the beloved franchise.

When offering advice to a potential director, Yoshida emphasized Final Fantasy's essence—challenging the status quo. He proposed exploring innovative gameplay, such as a real-time/turn-based hybrid or a return to pixel art roots, showcasing a commitment to pushing boundaries. Square Enix's interest in further action genre developments beyond FFXVI became evident, reflecting a continuous pursuit of storytelling, emotion, and impact in gaming.

Looking ahead, Yoshida revealed plans for Creative Business Unit III, involving the completion of Final Fantasy XVI's remaining DLC and ongoing support for Final Fantasy XIV. Additionally, experiences gained during FFXVI's development could potentially influence the creation of an entirely new game.
