Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the Final Fantasy series soundtracks, has announced that Fantasian Neo Dimension will be his final full video game composition. Known for shaping the music of Final Fantasy since the beginning, Uematsu’s work has spanned 38 years and 21 games. Fantasian Neo Dimension, set to release on December 5, 2024, will mark the conclusion of his remarkable career.
In a message to fans, Uematsu said, “This is my final project as a video game composer. I hope you’ll pick it up and play it!” His statement, shared via the official Fantasian Twitter account, highlights his decision to step back from composing entire game soundtracks due to the physical and mental demands.
Although Fantasian Neo Dimension will be his final full soundtrack, Uematsu has hinted in the past that he may still contribute individual tracks for future projects. His recent work on the main themes for Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shows his openness to smaller contributions. In an interview, he also expressed a willingness to provide music for the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
Update 16.10.2024:
Even though I mentioned in my article that Nobuo Uematsu has retired from composing full game soundtracks and will still make smaller contributions, he also released a statement to clarify this:
