Final Fantasy IX Remake Rumors Addressed by Naoki Yoshida

At Gamescom 2024, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida addressed speculation about the Final Fantasy IX collaboration in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail. In an interview with JPGames, Yoshida clarified that this collaboration was not connected to any potential Final Fantasy IX remake.

Yoshida emphasized that the collaboration was not intended to suggest any commercial plans for a Final Fantasy IX remake. He explained:

“So, the original concept that we had for Final Fantasy XIV is that it serves as a theme park for the Final Fantasy franchise and so we wanted to incorporate Final Fantasy IX because of that”

He acknowledged that it might seem logical to link the collaboration to a potential remake but stressed that this was not the case:

"We had never thought about doing Final Fantasy IX in relation to any sort of Final Fantasy IX Remake – we had never thought about it in that commercial sense. Of course it might make sense to think about it that way, but we never have."

Instead, the collaboration was designed as a tribute to both fans and developers who have a deep appreciation for Final Fantasy IX:

"Final Fantasy IX has huge volume, it’s a big game. If we were to wait for any sort of Remake project, we would just be waiting and waiting and we would be thinking: “When would we be able to incorporate that essence of Final Fantasy IX and make our hommage?” So I think potentially if any team was to take on doing a Remake for Final Fantasy IX, I would wish them the best of luck. (laughs)"

Despite ongoing rumors, Yoshida made it clear that there is no connection between the Final Fantasy IX collaboration and any future remake project.
