In an exclusive interview with Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, insights into the highly anticipated game were unveiled. Hamaguchi, known for his contributions to titles like Final Fantasy XII and Mobius Final Fantasy, now takes the helm as the sole director for Rebirth, having previously co-directed Final Fantasy VII Remake.
During a recent Square Enix event, RPGFan.com had the opportunity to play a demo of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and sit down with Hamaguchi to delve into the intricacies of the upcoming game.
One of the key focuses for Hamaguchi and his team was the integration of characters into Rebirth's combat system. Careful consideration was given to maintaining balance while ensuring each character retained their unique abilities. For instance, Red XIII, known for his close-range attacks, possesses a timing-based guard ability, setting him apart from characters like Cloud. Likewise, Cait Sith's gameplay involves riding a fat Moogle and utilizing dice element attacks, adding a distinctive dimension to battles.
The Gold Saucer, known for its array of minigames, will see most of its original offerings recreated for Rebirth. Hamaguchi expressed particular enthusiasm for the Chocobo races, which not only promise engaging gameplay but also tie seamlessly into the main storyline. Additionally, players can anticipate discovering minigames both within the Gold Saucer and scattered throughout the world, waiting to be uncovered through exploration and interactions.
The Mog House minigame, for example, is now available on the world map and not within the Gold Saucer.
Synergy team attacks, a notable feature in the trailers, will be available between all characters, providing players with the freedom to experiment and choose their preferred character pairings. Each character will also have their own skill tree, allowing for the development of new synergy actions and abilities, catering to individual playstyle preferences.
The interview touched on the enigmatic summons of Final Fantasy VII. While specific details on which summons will be featured in Rebirth remain undisclosed, Hamaguchi hinted at a deeper exploration of their origins, intertwining them with the game's narrative. Additionally, a growth element tied to side content and minigames will influence the abilities of summon materia.
Furthermore, the prospect of introducing Weapon creatures as summons garnered interest, potentially offering players epic encounters reminiscent of giant Kaiju battles.
In response to queries about character customization, Hamaguchi confirmed that Rebirth will feature occasions with optional or mandatory clothing changes. These alterations will align with the story's context, ensuring players have a cohesive and impactful experience.
With these insights, anticipation for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues to build. The game's release in February is eagerly awaited by fans and newcomers alike.
