Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Sales and Platform Exclusivity Addressed by Yoshinori Kitase

In an exclusive interview with IGN Brazil during The Game Awards 2024, Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase addressed the sales performance of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the company's evolving platform strategy.

A financial report released by Square Enix in September 2024 indicated that Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth had not met profit expectations. Despite this, Kitase expressed satisfaction with the sales of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, highlighting its recognition in the PlayStation Partners Awards. The game received the Grand Award, celebrating the three best-selling titles developed in Asia between October 2023 and September 2024. The winners included Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Black Myth: Wukong, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

“In terms of sales expectations, being recognized with the Grand Award assures me we’ve reached a certain level”

Although specific sales numbers for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth were not revealed, past franchise performance provides some context. Final Fantasy XV, released as a multi-platform title, shipped 5 million copies within 24 hours. In contrast, Final Fantasy VII Remake sold 3.5 million in three days, and Final Fantasy XVI achieved 3 million sales during its launch week, both as PlayStation exclusives.

Kitase suggested that the exclusivity of Final Fantasy titles on PlayStation consoles may no longer be viable, given the current landscape of gaming.

“While we are confident and happy that we are reaching a certain level of sales, it is clear that with modern gaming, we cannot be exclusive to a single platform”

He also emphasized the need to reach a broader audience.

“I think we need to offer the game to as many players as possible”

The shift away from exclusivity could signal a more inclusive future for the franchise, with a focus on expanding its reach across multiple platforms.
