In the recently released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Ultimania book, as translated by the "Shinra Archaeology Department," some new insights have been shared about the game's technical aspects. Suichi Ikeda, the Lead Rendering Programmer, revealed that they had to completely rewrite the rendering code after the Remake. The PlayStation 5's extra power was solely dedicated to improving the frame rate, leaving no room for other enhancements. If the graphics resemble those of the Remake, it's seen as a success for the developers.
The lead technical programmer, Tomahito Hano, highlighted the efforts of the development team in utilizing Unreal Engine technology. While Unreal Engine 4 was the main game engine, the team incorporated some valuable features from Unreal Engine 5. This integration helped enhance the game's performance and deliver an outstanding gaming experience.
