Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Confirmed as Console-Exclusive to PlayStation

Updated: Mar 7

UPDATE:

The Washington Post corrects exclusivity claim, stating Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is not entirely a PlayStation exclusive. Reporter Gene Park retracts earlier statement, clarifying that only Remake and Rebirth are confirmed as Sony exclusives. The status of the third installment remains uncertain.

Sony has officially announced that the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles. The decision to secure console exclusivity reflects the significance of the original game in defining the PlayStation experience. Christian Svensson, Vice President of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives at Sony Interactive Entertainment, emphasized the importance of third-party partnerships, stating

"Final Fantasy has always been one of the primary franchise pillars on PlayStation consoles."

The collaboration between Sony and Square Enix on the Final Fantasy VII Remake project exemplifies this ongoing commitment.

Developing for a single platform has proven advantageous for the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of the remake, highlighted the benefits of a seamless world map and the absence of loading screens, which enhance the immersive experience for players. Kitase explained

"Had it not been on a single platform, the world map would not be seamless, and game design may have had to regress significantly."

This focus on a single platform has allowed the development team to create a captivating world filled with diverse geography, indoor and outdoor locations, and engaging activities.

The third and final game in the trilogy poses an exciting challenge for the development team. Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, revealed that a design document for the third game is already in progress. While much of the groundwork has been laid in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the team faces the task of rebuilding the world to accommodate the iconic airship "Highwind". Hamaguchi expressed his desire to meet fans' expectations, stating

"I definitely want to address the same for what is likely expected from our experience with the Highwind to explore the world."

Does this mean that the second and third parts are not coming to PC?
