Final Fantasy XIV Revealed Global Control Preference

Recent data presented at PAX West by Kei Adagiri, Final Fantasy XIV's lead UI designer, sheds light on the diverse control preferences of players worldwide. According to the statistics shared during the panel, there is a significant contrast in input device choices between Japanese players and the rest of the world.

Globally, the majority of players prefer to use a mouse and keyboard. In North America, 60% of players opt for this setup, while in Europe, the figure rises to 67%. However, the situation in Japan is markedly different, with 77% of players favoring gamepads and controllers over traditional mouse and keyboard setups.

Adagiri also discussed the preferred control schemes among players. The Legacy control scheme, which allows for independent movement of the character from the camera, is overwhelmingly popular. In Japan, 97% of players use the Legacy scheme, compared to 69% in North America and 65% in Europe.

These preferences may be influenced by regional factors. In Japan, the popularity of consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and 5 likely contributes to the strong preference for gamepads. Additionally, upcoming platform releases, including potential Nintendo versions, could further impact these trends.
