Final Fantasy XIV TV Show Declared 'Dead' by Production Company

A Final Fantasy XIV live-action TV series, initially announced in 2019, has officially been declared "dead." Despite a promising pilot script and a multi-season plan by writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, the show failed to secure a streaming platform. The rejection was attributed to the colossal size and scale of the project, with Amazon coming closest to picking it up, according to Hivemind cofounder Dinesh Shamdasani.

Hivemind, known for producing Netflix's The Witcher, faced challenges in finding a platform willing to undertake the ambitious project. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters, with Thornton noting that studios began tightening budgets just as they pitched the series.

Naoki Yoshida, at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, expressed openness to media adaptations but revealed no concrete discussions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the game's image in any adaptation, aligning with its expansive storyline.
