In a recent interview with Inverse, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, shared his thoughts on which game he considers the "most complete." Interestingly, Sakaguchi chose Final Fantasy VI over the more globally recognized Final Fantasy VII. He highlighted that Final Fantasy VI stands out for its masterful use of pixel art, allowing the game to fully express its visual style within the technological limits of its time.
“In terms of the FF that I think is the ‘most complete; I believe Final Fantasy VI comes close, and does stand out above the other Final Fantasies, especially because it was the last Final Fantasy to use pixel art in all of its visual expression.”
Despite the game’s enduring popularity, the possibility of a remake similar to Final Fantasy VII's seems unlikely. Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VI, previously mentioned that such a project would be a monumental task, potentially taking up to 20 years to complete. Kitase also noted that while many developers at Square Enix are enthusiastic about the idea, it’s not feasible until the current Final Fantasy VII Remake series is finished.
Given the ambitious nature of recent Final Fantasy remakes, like the ongoing Final Fantasy VII Remake project, a Final Fantasy VI remake may remain a distant dream. However, Sakaguchi's recognition of its completeness highlights the game’s lasting legacy within the franchise.
