Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Continued Dedication to Final Fantasy XIV

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, has shown a remarkable dedication to Final Fantasy XIV, sometimes even at the expense of his work commitments. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Sakaguchi shared that his gameplay habits occasionally lead to missed meetings, with his Mistwalker team members having to remind him via the game itself.

“On a rare occasion — I want to stress ‘rare occasion’ — sometimes one of the Mistwalker team members will hop on Final Fantasy XIV, and I’ll see a message saying, ‘Hey, the meeting’s started.”

Sakaguchi has fully embraced his role as a player rather than a creator, stating:

“I’ve switched to a consumer rather than a creator.”

This shift is a significant reason why he has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise or other past projects like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. He explained:

“If I take on the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to genuinely enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much.”

Despite this, Sakaguchi has recently reunited with Square Enix after 20 years to release Fantasian Neo Dimension on multiple platforms, including PlayStation and PC. This new version will feature 4K graphics, voice acting, and additional enhancements. However, his interest in reviving older titles, such as Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, remains limited, with Terra Battle being a notable exception.

In addition to Fantasian Neo Dimension, Sakaguchi is finalizing a new project with Mistwalker, potentially a sequel to Fantasian, hinted at by the recent trademark for "Fantasian Dark Edge."
