Hiroshi Takai, the director of Final Fantasy XVI, has provided new insights into the potential future of the franchise's platform availability. In a recent interview, Takai discussed the possibility of Final Fantasy XVI making its way to Xbox Series X/S, a topic that has generated considerable interest among fans. While there are no confirmed plans, Takai acknowledged the demand for an Xbox port, stating, "We’re taking one thing at a time right now, so I can’t reveal anything about our future plans. All I can say is, it’s something I would personally like to see happen!"
This statement offers a glimmer of hope for Xbox users, though the immediate focus for Square Enix remains on completing the PC version of the game. Despite persistent rumors, Takai emphasized that the development team is prioritizing the PC port, leaving the possibility of an Xbox release as something to be addressed in the future.
In addition to discussing the Xbox port, Takai also touched on the broader release strategy for future Final Fantasy titles. Reflecting on the delayed PC launch of Final Fantasy XVI, Takai suggested that future games in the franchise might see simultaneous releases on both PC and consoles. He remarked, "I think it’s possible – probably even likely," indicating that Square Enix may shift towards day-one multiplatform launches, aligning with the company’s evolving strategy to reach a wider audience.
Takai further explained that the decision to delay the PC release of Final Fantasy XVI was not without its challenges and reiterated that the company sees little benefit in such delays. "We don't get anything out of delaying its release either. That said, I don't think there's much more we could have done to speed up the porting process," Takai said, highlighting the complexities involved in optimizing the game across different platforms.
As Square Enix continues to refine its approach to game releases, fans can expect future titles to be more accessible across various platforms from day one. Whether or not Final Fantasy XVI will arrive on Xbox remains to be seen, but Takai’s comments certainly leave the door open for the possibility.
