Homebrew Developer Shows a Final Fantasy VII Prototype for Sega Saturn

A recent YouTube video by homebrew developer Frogbull has revealed a prototype of Final Fantasy VII running on the Sega Saturn. The video showcases gameplay, including a battle with Cloud and soldiers, using the Mednafen emulator with ReShade and a CRT shader.

Frogbull, known for their Metal Gear Solid prototype on the Saturn, shared the video as a Christmas gift to the Saturn community, acknowledging the prototype's imperfections. The developer utilized Metal Gear Solid Saturn as a base, incorporating XL2's engine for functionality.

Technical insights include video encoding using Cinepak, extracting 3D models with software like kujata and Noesis, and reusing code from XL2's engine. Despite the achievement, Frogbull refrains from public sharing to prevent unauthorized reproduction and sales.

Responding to inquiries, Frogbull mentioned the gameplay runs at 30 FPS on Saturn, and the extended loading times are attributed to personal choices in music playback.
