In a recent interview with Famitsu, the Final Fantasy XIV sound team discussed the innovative approach to the Dawntrail expansion soundtrack, which involves assigning different composers to each area. This strategy marks a departure from previous expansions, where a single composer typically crafted the entire soundtrack.
Masayoshi Soken, who composed the score for the Living Memory area, explained that this method reflects Dawntrail’s thematic focus on cultural diversity. Takafumi Imamura contributed music for Shaaloani, Daiki Ishikawa composed for Yak T’el Woodlands, and Saya Yasaki provided soundtracks for both Urqopacha and Kozama’uka.
Soken further noted that the thematic arc in the FFXIV soundtrack, which began with A Realm Reborn, concluded with Endwalker. This transition opened the door for younger composers to bring fresh interpretations to the game’s musical landscape.
Typically, the team begins working on expansion music about a year before release. However, for Dawntrail, they started in early 2024. The process faced challenges, particularly due to graphical updates that restricted the team’s access to visual references within the game, making this soundtrack creation process unique in several respects.
