In an interview with YouTuber Julien Chieze, director Naoki Hamaguchi, confirmed that progress has been made on the script and that the team is considering "certain developments". Hamaguchi's comments indicate that the transition from Rebirth to Part 3 is similar to the transition from the first game to the sequel. Producer Yoshinori Kitase had previously mentioned completing a tentative first draft, suggesting that the project is moving forward. However, specific details about the stage of development were not disclosed.
"When we got to the end of the development for Remake, we started talking about a sequel with [writer Kazushige Nojima] and I think we can say that we are in the same situation today."
Based on Hamaguchi's statement about following the same trajectory as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it is speculated that the game might be released around 2028. This estimation aligns with the approximately four-year gap between the releases of the previous installments.
