In a recent FFXIV Letter from the Producer live, Naoki Yoshida addressed the rumors about his involvement in a potential remake of Final Fantasy IX.
Yoshida firmly denied any connection to developing a Final Fantasy IX remake. Through his translator, he stated:
"Yoshida is not working on any sort of Final Fantasy IX remake."
While Yoshida acknowledged that Final Fantasy IX is a "wonderful, wonderful title" and a "hefty game" with more content than Final Fantasy VII, he expressed concerns about the scale of such a project. He noted that if a Final Fantasy IX remake were to be undertaken, "we would have to be very careful and very mindful" due to the game's complexity.
Interestingly, Yoshida also addressed speculation that he would change the turn-based combat system to an action-oriented one if he worked on a Final Fantasy IX remake. He clarified:
"If we were remaking FFIX, people would complain we'd turn it into an action game! But I'd make it turn-based."
The upcoming expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail, includes references to Final Fantasy IX characters and elements. This has fueled rumors about a potential remake of Final Fantasy IX. Yoshida thinks these rumors may have started because of reports about his team working on several unannounced games, including two that will be revealed "soon."
Despite the ongoing speculation, Yoshida's clear statement during the live letter has put to rest the rumors of his direct involvement in a Final Fantasy IX remake project.
