Square Enix has officially announced a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, with Producer Naoki Yoshida addressing key details about its development in a video interview published on X. According to Yoshida, the mobile adaptation will begin its story with A Realm Reborn (Version 2.0), the reboot of the original MMORPG following the cancellation of Version 1.0. Updates will be rolled out progressively, with player feedback influencing the pace to avoid overwhelming users or causing delays.
Yoshida clarified that the mobile version would not feature a gacha system, a monetization method common in mobile gaming. Instead, the focus will be on creating a free-to-play experience that respects the design philosophy of the original game. LIGHTSPEED, a partner studio, has structured the game’s monetization around play duration rather than random mechanics. Yoshida stated,
"I want each and every person to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV for as long as they can, while only receiving a little bit of money from players as part of the monetization.”
While the original Final Fantasy XIV operates on a subscription-based model, the mobile version is adapting to a free-to-play structure to suit the platform. Although it will highly likely include microtransactions, they aim to avoid heavy monetization tactics. Yoshida encouraged players to share feedback during playtests, which will first take place in China before the game’s global release.
