Naoki Yoshida Predicts Console Extinction in a Decade

In a recently uploaded interview by Jyonetsu Tairiku TV, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida shared insights into the future of gaming hardware, predicting the extinction of consoles within the next 10 years. This marks a significant departure from the ongoing console wars that have defined the gaming industry for decades.

Yoshida, known for advocating against exclusivity, highlighted the challenges posed by the recent PS5-exclusive release of Final Fantasy XVI, which sold an impressive 3 million units. Emphasizing a desire to create games accessible across all platforms, he previously suggested the industry should consolidate to a single console.

Looking ahead, Yoshida envisions a cloud-based gaming approach, where players can access content through high-end servers and data centers via a simple internet connection. While Sony and Microsoft are already implementing this technology, Yoshida believes it will truly become meaningful by 2025, paving the way for a significant industry-wide transformation.

However, the producer acknowledges a delay in the timeline due to the pandemic, now expecting one more generation of consoles before a full shift to a cloud-focused gaming landscape in approximately 10 years.
