In a recent interview with The Gamer, Naoki Yoshida discussed the potential for a new installment in the beloved Final Fantasy Tactics series, drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy XVI. While talking about the upcoming DLC, Yoshida pondered the idea of incorporating Final Fantasy XVI's mechanics into a Tactics revival. He recognized the difficulty of adapting the epic battles of the game into Tactics' grid-based format but showed enthusiasm for the project.
“How would we even do the Eikon versus Eikon battles in that style? If you have the Eikons, how many squares is an Eikon going to be?"
"But the series does lend itself well to that kind of storytelling, and we love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”
Yoshida acknowledged the influence of Tactics and Final Fantasy XII on the development team, highlighting the shared DNA among the games. He emphasized that if they were to embark on a new Tactics venture, they wouldn't want to retread old ground but would aim for fresh storytelling.
“We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team. We’re very happy for you to suggest this because we’re all fans, but if we were going to make this, we wouldn’t want to do the same story that turns out to be a different story.”
Despite rumors swirling about a potential Tactics remaster, Square Enix has remained tight-lipped on the matter. However, recent tactical adventures from the studio, such as Triangle Strategy and Tactics Ogre: Reborn, indicate a continued interest in the genre.
For fans of the series, Yoshida's words offer a glimmer of hope for the return of a beloved classic.
