Speedrunners Discover Major Final Fantasy VII Skip Involving Aerith and Forgotten Capital

Major Final Fantasy VII Spoiler Ahead!

Speedrunners AceZephyr and Kuma have discovered a significant glitch in Final Fantasy VII that allows players to skip a substantial portion of the game and keep Aerith in the party, even past her iconic death scene. Using a complex exploit in the game’s mechanics related to Chocobo mounting, players can traverse the world map and head directly from Midgar to the Forgotten Capital, skipping key story events.

This discovery, which was posted by speedrunner Luzbel on X/Twitter, has caused excitement within the speedrunning community. The glitch does not involve cheats, but rather leverages how the game handles positional data when mounting and dismounting Chocobos. By doing this, players can walk across the ocean and bypass large parts of the game.

For years, fans have speculated about ways to save Aerith without using cheats, and now, thanks to this glitch, players can keep her in the party even after the dramatic events at the Forgotten Capital. However, there is a catch: the game softlocks if Aerith is present in scenes where she wouldn’t normally appear.

This glitch offers a major time-saving opportunity for speedrunners, cutting about two hours from a typical run. Players must disable in-game encounters during the skip, as battles while crossing the ocean will cause the game to freeze.

While the glitch is still being optimized, it provides a new way to experience one of the most emotional moments in Final Fantasy VII and a way to keep Aerith in the party.
