Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XI team has shared plans to expand solo play options in 2025, following insights gathered from a recent adventurer survey. Over 13,000 players participated in the survey, revealing an almost equal division between those who prefer solo play and those who play with groups. Many respondents cited challenges in forming parties and accessing endgame content, prompting the team to address these concerns directly.
Upcoming changes include enhancements to the Alter Ego system, a feature allowing players to summon NPC companions. These updates will increase NPC power and adjust entry requirements for solo players. Quality of life improvements are also planned, such as opening the Assist Channel to all players and implementing new party-matching tools to simplify finding teammates for multiplayer content.
The development team is also considering updates to older content, such as Besieged and Records of Eminence, to ensure they remain relevant and accessible. These adjustments aim to provide a more seamless experience for solo players while maintaining opportunities for group gameplay.
Producer Yoji Fujito explained the motivation behind these updates:
“Many people play the game solo for various reasons, including instances when it is difficult to form parties, or simply because they prefer to experience the game on their own. In order to provide such players with an extra challenge, we will be looking at powering up the alter ego system and also taking another look at the entry requirements for battle content that requires players to form parties. By doing so, it is our hope that solo players can have an experience that is more in-line with the endgame content.”
Although a timeline for these changes has not been provided, Fujito mentioned that the team is close to finalizing their plans. These updates represent Square Enix’s commitment to adapting Final Fantasy XI to the needs of its diverse playerbase, ensuring its relevance even after 22 years.
