Naoki Yoshida recently provided updates on the potential expansion of the game to Nintendo consoles during an interview with Gamereactor at Gamescom 2024. Yoshida emphasized Square Enix's goal of making Final Fantasy XIV available on as many platforms as possible, continuing its legacy of accessibility to a broad player base.
"I'm sure that all of the media and our players probably suspecting they really want to have our game release on Nintendo's consoles, but the concept that we have for Final Fantasy XIV is to release our game on as many devices as possible."
Currently, Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the development team is in active discussions to bring the game to Nintendo hardware, specifically eyeing the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor due to the game’s high visual and technical requirements. Yoshida confirmed that the team is "making progress" in these discussions and hinted that an official announcement could be expected soon, stating:
"So looking towards achieving that goal. We are working towards, making progress and we are having discussions. So I hope that everyone can look forward to news in the time to come."
While no specific release dates or details have been confirmed, Yoshida’s remarks suggest that Square Enix is committed to broadening the game’s accessibility across all major gaming platforms. This move aligns with Square Enix's new business strategy to release future Final Fantasy titles on as many platforms as possible, rather than limiting it to selected ones.
