Square Enix Revises Game Development Approach, Incurs $140 Million Loss

Square Enix just announced a big loss of ¥22.1 billion (about $140 million) due to what they're calling "content abandonment losses." This revision comes as the company seeks to streamline its approach to PC and console game development, opting for a more selective allocation of resources.

The decision, reached by the Board of Directors in March 2024, reflects Square Enix's commitment to focusing on high-definition games while ensuring a higher quality standard. However, this strategic pivot comes with substantial financial implications, impacting the company's fiscal year ending in March 2024.

President Kiryu's vision for Square Enix emphasizes elevating certain IPs to AAA status, hinting at fewer but more polished releases in the future. Despite the lack of specifics regarding the canceled or revised projects, Square Enix stands firm in its commitment to delivering top-tier gaming experiences to its audience.
