In a recent interview with journalist Stephen Totilo, Nicolas Doucet, the head of Team Asobi, addressed the absence of iconic Final Fantasy characters, particularly Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, in their latest title, Astro Bot. Team Asobi had aimed to include Cloud but faced obstacles with Square Enix not approving the request.
Doucet explained, “It’s difficult to comment on why Square Enix didn’t approve any cameos. We really respect the choice of each publisher.” While Team Asobi managed to include "almost 100%" of its most-wishlisted Sony characters, the lack of Final Fantasy representation stands out, given the franchise's significant history with the PlayStation platform.
Doucet emphasized the importance of balancing characters that are widely recognized by players and those that are more obscure, stating that the team aimed to introduce lesser-known characters that evoke fond memories for dedicated fans. However, the failure to secure Cloud Strife's appearance leaves many wondering about the underlying reasons behind Square Enix's decision.
As Astro Bot continues to gain traction, fans of the franchise will be watching closely for any potential future collaborations that may involve Final Fantasy characters.
